2019 Maple Syrup Season Kickoff

The long, cold days of winter are quickly becoming a thing of the past! The first day of spring has come and gone. The snow is slowly beginning to melt, signaling the first real chores we have here. A couple of days of dusting off and rinsing our maple sugaring gear. Soon after we had everything pulled out of storage, the first day above freezing arrived.

Tapping Trees in Algoma 2019, northern Ontario – Video

The maple syrup season has officially kicked off in Algoma, northern Ontario. This season is already shaping up to be one for the books. On March 10th, we tapped the first few ‘test’ trees on the property, close to the house to make daily sap inspections easy. With 4 feet of snow still on the ground, making our way through the bush was interesting, to say the least. As long as you managed to stay on top of the hard upper crust of the snow, you were fine. Breaking through that crust meant dragging yourself up and out of several feet of snow. We have since managed to pack the trails down a little, making the trek to collect sap from our 30 some odd trees a little more manageable.

Our first sap boil will come sooner than we think it will!
