A quick look at how we built our northern chicken coop and using the deep litter composting method in the coop to help generate a little bit of warmth for the chickens, and speed up the composted chicken manure for use in our gardens. Our chicken coop stays comfortable in the winter for the birds without adding any extra heat to the coop. Ventilation is far more important than heat in your chicken coop in the winter. Chickens have been kept in all climates for hundreds of years without heating the coop in the winter. The coop was built out of lumber from an old cabin that once stood on the Wilderstead. We used plans we found online and modified them for our needs, and what lumber we had on hand to build the coop.
